I cannot remember why the Euro S54 M Coupe (2002) had 10 more horses than the US model. Can anyone tell me how (or if) I can recoup those lost horses?
Thanks

While it was claimed the difference was due to the exhaust (cat-converters to be specific) - I believe it was actually due to the lower redline the S54 had in the US (which was a reaction to the engines spinning connecting rod bearings.) Europe had 8,000 RPM, US has 7,500 RPM. There are software vendors who restore the 8K redline.

Don...Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. I've had 2 Coupes (an S52 and now and S54) and I certainly have loved both of them! By the way...do you know of anyone (other than Dinan) who makes a colad air intake for the 2002 S54? I have been to ever website I could find but on one seems to make CAI for anything later than a 2000 model year

Mark: Interestingly I have been looking everywhere for a cold air intake other than Dinan. What I am doing, I bought a K&N cold air intake direct from K& N that is for the euro based M Coupe, it will need some modification done but we believe it is going to work. I will let you know how it goes.

Gary...very interesting! The S54 obviously already "directs" air from the left front air dam intake in a general fashion towards the airbox. I'll be really interested in how you do the modifications and how it comes out. So Far I have simply settled for the K+N filter in ther stock air box

The late 90's Euro version had the S50 engine which was certainly more powerful than the US versions - claimed 321hbp standard. The main obvious difference seems to have been the intake system. There is little tech info on the S50 engine, and all the worksop books etc. are US-centred.

This is a link to spectre cold air intakes that are sold by Jeggs performance. You can order any part, piece by piece and completely build and design your own intake. from 90 and 45 degree bends to different lengths of straight pieces. It's all there 3, 3.5 and 4 inch diameter.

Mike...Thanks very much for the Jeggs Link. I would never have thought to look at Jeggs since I usually thinl of them as muscle car or drag race equipment. Now if I can just figure out the best pathway and angles from the wheel well up to the intake plenum I might be able to actually get this to work. I'll post any progress I make....please let me know if anyone else is successful in building a good CAI for the S54
Thanks

I think some, but not all, of the 10 hp difference is due to the different way DIN and SAE hp are measured.
