BMW M Coupe, M Roadster | Z3 & Z4 Resource Network

Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a 2000 M Coupe.  Bought it new in 99 and flew to TX to get it (live in Bay Area, CA).  I haven't been to dorkfest since Scott was running it in half moon bay.  I'm sorry I can't make it this year.  My folks live in Ventura and the location is just up the road!

Anyway, I've seen quite a few posts about 6 speed transmission mods to cars with S54 motors and also to S52 cars that have been upgraded to S50B32 Euro motors with 6 speed.

I've got a Dinan Blower in mine (did the install in my garage with some help from friends and no lift), so the motor isn't going anywhere.  My car has great legs and just needs overdrive.  This thing can easily get >30mpg to make it the ultimate grand tourer.  Plus I have that annoying 5th gear gate sticking problem that will require me to drop the tranny, so I might as well upgrade while I'm at it.  Has anyone done a 6 speed tranny mod to a Coupe with an S52 motor?  I've heard the 6 speed from 03-04 E46 330ci should fit (and only require shortened driveshaft and shortened shift lever), but my mechanic isn't 100% certain.  Can anyone confirm or offer another suggestion?

Also, it seems BMW really likes their gear ratios.  I've noticed all the transmission candidates have a 6th gear have a ratio of 0.83:1.  My car (actually probably all M's) can handle a much taller ratio (0.60ish).  I'd like to maintain 1-5.  I'm no mechanic, but is it possible to change one gear in a tranny so that 6th can get taller?

Anyway, thanks for your time and consideration!

Sean

I also posted on Dorkfest, so I apologize in advance if you see it twice ;)
